The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) views with apprehension the suspension of CN Sharma’s television station, Channel 6 which took effect from Monday 3 October, 2011 for four months. The Union views this action by President Jagdeo as arbitrary and excessive. The Union further views the action as unwarranted in the present context of an election season when the views of persons who are not supportive of the Governing Party are stifled. Apart from the effect this suspension has on the expression of views that contribute to a level playing field for free and fair elections, it must be clear to all that the workers at CNS TV 6 are put on the bread line by this action. At the time of issuing this statement it has come to the attention of the Union that President Jagdeo at a PPP/C Rally in Kitty announced a deferral of the suspension to December 1, 2011. In the view of the Union all this does is to postpone the agony of the Sharmas’. The GPSU calls for a complete lifting of the suspension and for the matter to take its normal course in the High Court. |
