Guyana Public Service Union
2009  CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
MR. PATRICK M. YARDE -  PRESIDENT

I extend Season’s Greetings to all Guyanese, friends, well wishers and the general public and their families, and more especially to members of the Guyana Public Service Union and their families.  We are fully conscious of the fact that the capacity to respond in the usual traditional Guyanese manner to this season has over time been significantly eroded. Nevertheless I urge you to be positive and openminded and once more to reflect objectively on your experiences and circumstances over the last decade and more particularly on the events (national, regional and international) of year 2009 as they relate to governance in Guyana.

In particular, I urge you our members to view the erosion of labour rights and previously accepted and established industrial relations laws and practices as serious violations and undesirable developments with the potential of undermining the nature of the legacy which you had inherited and may not be able to bequeath to your children and grandchildren.
Observers of the industrial scene in Guyana must be concerned at the increasing tendency to interpret developments in this area as having political and racial connotations.  However, while conscious of these tendencies, we should continue to strive for national unity and harmony and, as we had previously indicated, we should exhibit the capacity to draw on “your humanity and strength of character to find that place in your heart and that determination of spirit to resolve whatever animosity or conflict that you have diagnosed.”

I will also be guided by this philosophy in addressing you when I share my thoughts with you in the presentation of my New Year message, and in the articulation of suggestions and proposals to be adopted in 2010 to address our concerns, bearing in mind that we can only do so successfully if there is unity among us.
Once more I wish you a merry, safe and peaceful Christmas to you and your family.
