Guyana Public Service Union “Rights at work - Ending Poverty & Inequality” PUBLIC SERVICE DAY MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE GENERAL SECRETARY - CHANDRAWATTIE PERSAUD Let me first of all convey a goodwill message to all Public Servants who have continued to offer dedicated services, at times under extremely difficult circumstances. I sincerely thank them for having embraced the Guyana Public Service Union rallying calls for solidarity and providing quality public services to the people of Guyana . The Guyana Public Service Union fully supports and joins with the United Nations in the observance of as Public Service Day on June 23. It has been noted that the United Nations Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of Public Service to the community, its contribution in the development process, recognize the work of Public Servants and encourage young people to pursue career in the Public Sector. This is the first time the Guyana Public Service Union has set aside a day of activity to mark this occasion. In so doing, it intends to focus on encouraging young people to pursue careers in the public sector. In this regard a Youth Forum has been scheduled for June 23. It is our expectation that the youths in the public service would formulate a strategy to encourage other youths to pursue careers in the public sector. It is difficult for us to achieve prosperity through economic growth or development without the backing of a strong public service. A properly functioning public service is therefore a prerequisite for social and economic transformation. In this context, the Guyana Public Service Union assures you of our commitment to working with major stakeholders and civil society organizations to providing a conducive environment for all actors to make positive contributions towards the development of a modernized public service. We are however mindful that public service initiatives alone cannot transform the Public Service. The meaningful participation and contribution of all stakeholders is crucial if we are to further improve services and meet the many expectations of our citizens. The Guyana Public Service Union has commenced and will continue to drive the public sector to aspire to the attainment of better performance. The opportunity exist for public service customers to share ideas with public service providers on how best to improve service delivery in order for us to achieve that noble goal of the delivery of quality public service to all our people. To achieve this we will rely on your continued support and enhanced participation in all of our programmes and activities. The Public Service in Guyana is the major support and foundation for the growth of other sectors. Much more can be achieved if this sector is completely modernized so that the modern day challenges of other sectors can be adequately addressed and with greater satisfaction. To this end, selected morale and productivity enhancing awareness, which include training and capacity building, improved pay and benefits, reintroduction of performance appraisal systems, must be implemented now. I wish all Public Servants well, and request them to continue to do their best wherever they are deployed. You are challenged to double your efforts in the esteemed task of nation building. This way we will be able to improve the lives of all our citizens. 160 Regent Road & Shiv. Chanderpaul Drive Bourda GEORGETOWN June 22, 2009 |
